Whittier Tech students connect with Wingate residents

Whittier Tech sophomores in the health assisting program are working to stay connected and learn more about their community throughout the pandemic thanks to a new pen pal program between the school and a local assisted living facility.
Shortly after Thanksgiving, 16 Whittier Tech sophomores began exchanging letters with the same number of residents at Wingate Residences at Haverhill.
Supervising adults sign up for Letters from Little Ones.
WH SeniorLink emails the adults information to share with their children about what they might like to put in a letter.
Adults whose children are participating in Letters from Little Ones mail their children’s letters to the WH SeniorLink team.
WH SeniorLink’s social workers then review the letters to ensure that they are anonymous and appropriate, and forward the letters to individual seniors.

Jacobs Oct. 30, 2020 On a recent foggy morning, Brandon Woolf was sitting on a foldable chair, in front of a foldable table, next to a Brooklyn mailbox, writing letters on a 1940s-vintage portable Royal typewriter. He was dressed in a navy blue T-shirt emblazoned with the U.S. Postal Service logo. A chalkboard sign in front of him explained the project to passers-by: “Free Letters for Friends Feeling Blue.”

Join us at our table for The Squiggle Game: As we have done before at the Letters Trellis tent, we will also have a special something for those too young or too old (and every age in between) to engage with letter writing. It is in the same spirit — connection and communication through touching the heart, if not the hand. It is about honoring the process of sharing, in a non-digital way, the art of engaging creatively. Perhaps you saw us at a past Farmer’s Market? If not, I will introduce the activity: One person draws a simple squiggle — the next person adds meaning to the squiggle with additions to the drawing.
